Current Conservation Projects
Current conservation projects include:
* A 26 panel, 6 kW solar array received through a grant from Green Mountain Energy - Sun Club provides about 60% of annual power needs at the Powell Visitor Center.
* A second 21 panel, 6.3kW solar array received through a grant from Green Mountain Energy - Sun Club provides power to the Cactus Greenhouse and the well-pump.
* The remainder of purchased electricity is 100% renewable from wind or solar sources through Green Mountain Energy.
* Rainwater is collected in water catchment tanks.
* Demonstration gardens for xeriscaping with native plants surround the Visitor Center and can be found in the Pollinator Garden.
*Water is conserved by mulching around plants and planting areas, and careful, measured, seasonal watering, including drip irrigation.
* We encourage recycling and promote "thermostat" management for heating and cooling.
* Free information regarding climate change and steps to reduce carbon emissions is available inside the Visitor Center.
